Prof. Jannie T. Ferreira obtained a BSc Hons (Cum Laude), MSc (Cum laude) and PhD in Physiology and a Post Graduate Teacher’s Diploma before obtaining his B Optom (Cum laude).
He retired from University of Johannesburg in 2013 and during his career he:
o Head of the Department of Optometry at RAU and later University of Johannesburg
o Authored or co-authored of 157 scientific papers
o Provided supervision to 18 PhD and 42 Masters’ students.
o Attended and presented at 40 International and 111 National conferences.
PRESTIGE AWARDS:
1977 - Abe Bailey Travel Bursary for Student Leadership
1980 - Nominated for Junior Capt. Scott as best M.Sc. student in Zoology in SA.
1980 - Nominated for the South African Chemical Foundation’s medal for PhD
1983 - Outstanding Junior Researcher RAU for research visit to overseas
1985 - Received the SA Anglers Association's gold medal for contribution in fish research.
1988 - CSIR -Y- status - promising young researcher
1993 - Melvin Jones Fellow USA from Lions Clubs Inter Found for dedicated humanitarian services
1994 - Optical Award from SA Optical Society for the concept of the Eye care train
1995 - Officer in the Order of St. John’s by the Queen of England for establishing the Health Care Train (Phelophepa)
2000 - Honorary Fellow of Optometric Educators in Africa for the role played in establishing optometric education in Africa
2008 - The United Nations Public Service Award in the ‘Improving Service Delivery’[Phelophepa]
2018 - Prestigious Vision award SAOA for contribution to community eye care in South Africa
2024 - SAOA Centennial Celebration Awards: Community Service for Exceptional Dedication to the Provision of Eye Care to Communities and Individuals in need.
